Back in the Precambrian days, before the dinosaurs walked the earth, I first strode into the parking lot of a place called Junior Gym – a youth gymnastics facility in Van Nuys that was the first home of Valley Crossfit. The workouts were done on a spring floor or the parking lot. There were about 2 barbells, 8 kettlebells, 3 or 4 rowers, and gymnastics blocks served as racks. Most living organisms of that period of time were barely multicellular, but a rather striking figure of a man named Sagi was already in attendance and he literally took me by the hand – so I could help him try to box jump on one of the plyo boxes he was a little scared of assailing on his own.

 

I was quite lucky to get a really easy workout as my first Crossfit experience. You may be familiar with the walk-in-the-park known as “Fight Gone Bad.” My guide-guru for this experience was the legendary Marcus, a sweet and nurturing figure who kindly painted dismal and catastrophic pictures of what this experience was going to be like. He was not wrong. I ended up having to step up on my box “jumps” in the 3 rd round because my legs went spasmodic from the wall balls and everything else. This was a Thursday evening in late May of 2006. For some strange reason, I came back for the next available class the following Sunday (another lovely cakewalk of a workout called “Santa Cruz”)…and have been making the same glorious mistake ever since.
